Changelings

A Changeling has a flight speed of 36// with maneuverability class "A". However, if they carry another man-sized creature, their speed drops to 24//. Moreover, if the person carried exceeds the Changeling's Max Lift, the character must make an Endurance check at -1 for each 5 pounds over the limit. Even if the check is successful, the flight speed is reduced by 1// per five pound overage. It costs one point of Endurance per round to fly. If Endurance is brought to zero, the Changeling must make an emergency landing (save vs. area effect or take 3d6 damage). A Changeling does not lose consciousness if Endurance is fully expended, but the entity does suffer combat and ability penalties equal to -8 until Endurance recovers to at least ¼ max. The spent Endurance points recover at the rate of 1 per turn, provided the being does nothing more taxing than walking.

A Changeling's empathy cannot be used to turn friends against friends and family against family. A changeling can use his or her empathy communicate emotion as well as visual imagery and symbolism, but the power is not sufficient to communicate the spoken word.

Changeling-to-Changeling empathy works instantaneously if both entities are willing and touch contact is accomplished. If there is a distance separation, then the percentages are still double normal. Empathy with non-Changelings works only at the normal percentages. Two Changelings bonded by marriage can achieve empathic contact with each other even at great distances (Changelings mate for life).

A Changeling's ability to sense presence actually detects the existence of life, but it cannot detect what kind of life. Thus a Changeling with his eyes closed could not tell the difference between a Human and a very intelligent dog. However, through long-term association, a Changeling does gain the ability to discriminate between friends and strangers. Additionally, the sense presence capability does give a Changeling the ability to detect invisible creatures. Such detection reduces the attack penalty to -4.

A Changeling's sense presence detect Undead only at a -8 penalty (the Changeling is trying to sense a hole in the connectedness of all life -- this is much more difficult than simply detecting a positive presence.) Moreover, a Changeling's ability to sense life-presence is blocked by metal thicker than 1", or by stone greater than 1', or by black basalt thicker than 3".

A Changeling has the highest metabolism of the five races, requiring 9 hours of sleep each night and a 3,500 calorie per day diet. A Changeling's diet consists of a very high percentage of carbohydrate and a low content of protein. Thus in Changeling cultures, most meals involve pastas, breads, and cereals but only a little meat.

Changelings are a very social race. They try to get along with everyone. To date, their closest relationships are those with the Dwarves. They get along fairly well with Humans, but have had only limited success in befriending Elves. Many of the Fey like the Changelings (except for the Green Fey) due to the fact that both races can fly, and that both races are a misunderstood minority. Changelings have something of a fear and suspicion of Constructs, due to the fact that most of these creatures do not have souls, and even the ones that do cannot be empathically scanned.
